An Introduction to Freemasonry and Our Unique Lodge

Royal Brunswick Lodge in Brighton

When people hear the word “Freemason,” they often have a lot of questions. What do you do in your meetings? Is it a secret society? At its core, Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest fraternal organisations, and it’s built on principles that are more relevant than ever. We’re a brotherhood of men from all walks of life—from entrepreneurs to engineers, artists to academics—who are dedicated to personal growth and a positive contribution to society. The principles of brotherly love, honesty, and integrity are the foundation of everything we do.

Here at the Royal Brunswick Lodge No 732, we are proud to be a part of this global fraternity, operating under the banner of the United Grand Lodge of England and the Provincial Grand Lodge of Sussex. You can find out more about the wider organisation on our Home Page. But what makes our lodge, RBL, stand out?

We believe it comes down to a perfect blend of rich tradition and genuine friendship. Our lodge, number 732, is a testament to our history, having been consecrated over a century and a half ago. This means our ceremonies are steeped in unique traditions that have been passed down through generations. Our visitors from other lodges are often surprised and impressed by the beauty and distinctive character of our ritual work.

Yet, despite our grand history, we’re a small lodge. This is our greatest strength. Our members are more than just colleagues; we’re a tight-knit group of friends and family. This is a place where you’ll be greeted by name, where your voice is heard, and where you’ll build lifelong bonds. This intimate setting also offers a practical advantage: if you’re interested in taking on leadership roles, your path to becoming the Master of the lodge can be much faster. In a larger lodge, this could take a generation; with us, it can be achieved in as little as eight years. And if you’re curious about the process, you can find a breakdown on our Join Us page.

Our brotherhood extends beyond our regular meetings at the Brighton Masonic Centre. We’re a highly social lodge with a vibrant calendar of events. We regularly host fun, informal gatherings like barbecues, picnics, or even just a casual beer and fish and chips evening. We also have a unique twinning relationship with two French lodges in Toulon and Lyon, which has led to some truly memorable family trips across the Channel.

We’re also deeply committed to our local community. Our charitable efforts have allowed us to make a real difference, from purchasing sensory equipment for a special needs child to contributing to rehabilitation equipment for a local student. We believe that by giving back, we truly live the values of Freemasonry. Take a look at our About Us page to learn more about our history and what we stand for.
